Rashes

Rashes are patches of skin that are abnormal in color or texture and can look bumpy, scaly, or swollen. Caused by psychological and environmental factors, they can bring about itchiness or pain.

What is it?

Altered skin color, texture, or sensation, often coupled with irritation or swelling, are indicative of skin rashes. These can be triggered by a multitude of psychological aspects such as depression, anxiety, fear, or a traumatic event, as well as environmental elements like air pollution, foodborne carcinogens, pesticides, lead exposure, or even extended computer screen use. Skin rashes can also stem from various conditions including chickenpox, contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, ringworm and shingles. Lately, a few patients have reported rashes linked to coronavirus infection.

Remember, you're not alone! Skin rashes are a common occurrence affecting virtually everyone at some point. Don't stress out; our board-certified team at Dermatologists of Southwest Ohio, serving areas including in Batavia, Beavercreek, Bridgetown, Cincinnati, Dayton, Dent, Greenville, Hillsboro, Kettering, Mason, Montgomery, Oxford, Troy, West Chester and Wilmington, Ohioontgomery, Ohio, is here to assist.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association advises seeking professional care from a board-certified dermatologist under the following circumstances:

  • A rash encompassing a large part of your body.
  • A rash that blisters, or develops into open sores or raw skin.
  • Fever or sickness accompanying a rash.
  • A rapidly spreading rash.
  • A rash that causes pain.
  • A rash affecting the eyes, lips, mouth, or genital skin.

How is it treated?

The course of treatment is contingent on the type or origin of the rash. Our treatment methods can include medicated ointments, topical anti-itch creams (hydrocortisone), moisturizers, topical anti-fungal creams, oral medications or oral antihistamines and light therapy. While some rashes cause more discomfort than harm, there are those that could indicate a more serious health condition. If your rash requires care, book an appointment today with one of our experienced dermatologists.
